There will be 3 courses – one in June, two in July.  The first two will be focusing on the artistic and business aspects of professional beauty retouching.  Not only will we cover retouching techniques to create that perfect image, but how to work with clients as well.  The third class is focusing taking an image from beginning to finish and all the steps in-between with basic and advanced retouching techniques.

The courses are…

The Business of Beauty Retouching

June 2 – 3, 10am – 5pm
Course#: SWC-2331-A

The Business of Beauty Retouching

Upcoming Workshop

I’ll be teaching a course at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops this summer, July 15th – July 20th, with David Robin. The course is “Lighting and Retouching for Portrait and Beauty”.  Information can be found here.

More details will be posted in March, so keep an eye out!

The Santa Fe Workshops is a year-round educational center in New Mexico focused on all things photography.  If you’re interested in growing your photography skills, fine or professional, they’re definitely worth a look.

“Lighting and Retouching for Portrait and Beauty” with David Robin, Carrie Beene. July 15 – July 20

Upcoming Speaking/Teaching Engagements

The big PhotoPlus Conference is coming up! If you don’t know about PDN’s PhotoPlus Expo, it’s one of the biggest and best phototography expos and conferences around and held annually here in NYC. If you’re a photographer or in the industry, it’s a must-see.

I have two Hands-On Masterclass Seminars at PhotoPlus this year – one for Product retouching and one for Beauty retouching.  Head on over to the PhotoPlus Seminar Schedule, register, and join up.  I’d love to see you there.

Descriptions from the PhotoPlus websites below…

Thu, Oct 27, 2011 – 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM
Professional Beauty Retouching

Seminar Description:
Using a dramatic cosmetic beauty shot as a starting point, retouching professional Carrie Beene will demonstrate how to enhance a variety of beauty situations called for in real world professional retouching during this two-hour hands-on session. Emphasis will be placed on high end retouching at a professional level. The major areas discussed will be skin, hair, lips and eyes, with an emphasis on Beene’s coveted technique for perfect textured skin and how to get it. Areas that will be addressed include: eyes: how to clean, add pop, create eyelashes for a variety of situations and remove or add makeup. Lips: cleaning extra lines, adding shine and creating gloss, matching lipstick colors and reshaping. Masking and color correction: How to create simple masks and use them for color correcting skin and hair. From understanding how blending modes work and why professionals use them in every retouch to exploring techniques to make skin look exquisite while retaining texture, Beene will cover everything under the sun. Additional areas of discussion include: how to add natural texture to flat or “soft” areas of hair, clothing or skin; procedures for creating specialized brushes to mimic eyelashes and strands of natural looking hair; using “On the Fly” quick mask mode to change and correct makeup and lip colors and methods for using liquify to enhance the shape of a models hair and face. All of the above will be done with attention to a high resolution output with seamless retouching. Handouts will be provided.

Sat, Oct 29, 2011 – 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM
Professional Product Retouching

Seminar Description:
In this two-hour, hands-on seminar, master retoucher Carrie Beene will demonstrate how to put products into a new background and retouch them for maximum pop and sharpness. Product retouching needs the proper structure for efficiency and ease of workflow. Building our file step-by-step, Beene will illustrate the importance of keeping the layer structure in correct form for easy changes. We will isolate product elements into groups so they can be moved along with their color corrections into different positions within the image with minimum effort. Product retouching is all about the color and mimicking an actual product. To address this, we will discuss how to change plastic to metal and silver- metal to gun-metal or black, high-shine metal. Beene will show you how to color correct powdered cosmetic products and give them texture, while also talking about adding shape and 3D quality to make the product jump off the page. Logo treatment is very important to product retouching. With this in mind, Beene will show you how to remove the logo from an image, add in the Illustrator file logo as a Smart Object and warp it into place for the highest possible sharpness. Finally, to address a common practice within today’s advertising community, Beene will demonstrate how to deliver a simplified PSD file to the client.

Teaching Summer Classes at SVA, 2011

sva.edu

School of Visual Arts website

If you’re interested in learning even more about beauty photographic retouching – techniques or the business – check out my classes this summer at the School of Visual Arts here in New York City.

There are 3 classes to choose from.  In the first 2 of the 3, The Business of Beauty Retouching , I cover retouching techniques for high-end beauty retouching including maintaining skin texture, enhancing make-up and improving body contours to make the beautiful look perfect.  Also, the course will address working with clients, negotiating “redos” and submitting the final files. These 2 classes 2 days of 7 hours each and run June 4th – 5th, and July 9th -10th.

The 3rd class, Advanced Beauty Retouching Techniques, reviews the process of taking an image and multiple retouching decisions and ending with a single image ready for publication utilizing basic retouching skills as well as new techniques.  Students will compose multiple image files, perform beauty retouches, create a convincing silhouette, add various effects and properly match product colors. The end result will be a client-ready deliverable file.  This class runs July 23rd – July 24th.

Get more info on each of these classes, or get registered, here.

Hope to see you there!
